KfW IPEX-Bank contributes to financing of Hapag-Lloyd newbuilding programme

Container auf einem Containerschiff im Meer

Hapag-Lloyd, Germany's largest liner shipping company and a long-standing customer of KfW IPEX-Bank, has signed contracts for an extensive newbuilding programme in October 2024: The world's fifth-largest carrier has ordered a total of 24 new container ships in two size classes. KfW IPEX-Bank is providing the financing for three 9,200 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) newbuilds totalling around USD 281 million as part of this major project. The financing is based on the Hapag-Lloyd Green Financing Framework, which complies with the standards of the Green Loan Principles of the Loan Market Association (LMA).

Hapag-Lloyd's newbuilding programme comprises container ship newbuilds with a total capacity of 312,000 TEU and a total investment volume of around USD 4 billion. It will enable Hapag-Lloyd to secure its position as the world's fifth-largest liner shipping company in the long term and contribute to achieving the company's ambitious decarbonisation targets. Hapag-Lloyd is fully committed to the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement. The ships will be equipped with state-of-the-art, low-emission and fuel-efficient high-pressure dual-fuel liquefied natural gas engines and are ammonia-ready. In addition, these ships can be fuelled with biomethane, which reduces CO2e emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional propulsion systems.
